Conveniently located to serve the areas of Miami and South Florida
Hair loss is a condition with many possible causes, including genetic predisposition. Hair growth after thinning can be stimulated with a combination of ablative treatments and growth hormones found in PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and KeraFactor serum. By injecting PRP, the body can generate the cells it needs to regrow hair, and the addition of ablative treatments makes the skin more susceptible to absorbing liquid treatments.
Dr. Silvia Rotemberg employs a holistic approach to cosmetic treatments and surgery, providing patients with support for both mind and body under her care. Board-certified since 2007, she has a wealth of experience and knowledge to inform her medical practice. What is Hair Replacement Therapy?
Male and female pattern baldness is caused by androgens (hormones that regulate sexual function). When these hormones are unregulated, it leads to thinning of the hair. (1) This condition can be embarrassing, often causing low self-esteem and confidence. If you are experiencing hair thinning, Rotemberg Plastic Surgery offers two different treatments that stimulate hair growth.
PRP
PRP therapy involves a simple process where a small amount of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from other components. This concentrated plasma is then injected into the scalp, specifically targeting areas of hair loss or thinning. Platelet-rich plasma is a substance found in the blood that has many regenerative properties. PRP has even been shown to improve outcomes when applied to hair follicles before transplantation. (1) The injection of PRP has also shown great promise to reintroduce growth hormones needed for healthy hair growth, and this is one of the treatments available for hair loss at Rotemberg Plastic Surgery.
To perform platelet-rich plasma treatments, Dr. Rotemberg first draws a small amount of blood from the patient. The blood is then spun at a very high rate. This process, called centrifugation, allows the red blood cells to separate from the plasma in the blood that contains platelets. They are separated by density, then the PRP is carefully extracted and prepared for reinjection. Once the PRP is once again separated into smaller syringes, Dr. Rotemberg will inject it into the scalp in equal quadrants. (1)
KeraLase Treatment
The LaseMD Ultra is a laser typically used for skin rejuvenation. It has multiple settings, with one targeted toward creating microscopic incisions in the scalp without causing damage to surrounding tissue. Studies have shown that inducing controlled injury with microneedling or laser treatments before topically applying medication or serum promotes the absorption and delivery of the drug. (1)
After the laser treatment is applied to the scalp, Dr. Rotemberg applies KeraFactor Serum directly to the areas that are thinning.
Once the tissue has been treated, it is more susceptible to accepting the serum. KeraFactor Serum contains a mixture of highly concentrated growth hormones specifically formulated to stimulate hair growth. When applied and massaged into the scalp, this serum works with your natural hormones to increase follicle growth from the inside out. (3)
Both of these available treatments are often repeated multiple times for the best results. Dr. Rotemberg will discuss your treatment plan during your consultation.
Benefits of Hair Replacement Therapy
There are multiple benefits to each treatment, including the following:
- Minimally Invasive – Both PRP and KeraLase treatments are less invasive than traditional hair transplantation.
- Customizable Procedure Plans – Because every patient’s hair loss is a little different, these treatments are specifically catered toward the individual to ensure desired outcomes.
- Safe and Effective – The treatment plans for both procedures are thoroughly tested and proven to increase hair growth.
If you are looking for a solution to hair loss, but are not ready or willing to undergo hair transplantation surgery, PRP and KeraLase are both great options to reintroduce a full and youthful hairline.
Ideal Candidates for Hair Replacement Therapy
To receive hair replacement therapy, you must have defined balding on the scalp. This can be present in any area of the scalp but is typically found around the forehead and near the crown of the head. When you show up for your appointment, your scalp must be healthy. You must also be in good overall health with no underlying conditions that could affect healing.
Hair replacement therapy can be a long process, so candidates must also have reasonable expectations of what PRP or KeraLase treatments can achieve. Dr. Rotemberg will advise you on any medication alterations that might be necessary during your consultation.
Personal Consultation
For your private consultation at Rotemberg Plastic Surgery, come prepared with your complete medical history. Dr. Rotemberg asks you about any previous hair loss treatments, what has and hasn’t worked for you, and if you have any allergies. The first appointment is her opportunity to get to know you and your situation to customize your treatment.
Dr. Rotemberg will use this time to explain your procedure plan in detail to make sure you are fully aware of the process. At the end of your appointment, a member of our staff will happily assist you in scheduling your treatments.
Preparation
All hair replacement therapy patients are advised to avoid anti-inflammatory medications in the days leading up to treatment. If you are a smoker, you must quit before your first appointment as these substances can inhibit proper healing. Since these treatments are minimally invasive, you will be able to go home right after Dr. Rotemberg is finished.
It is important to talk about your treatment plan as a whole during your first consultation. If you are undergoing multiple sessions, there will be certain instructions to follow from Dr. Rotemberg to help your treatments work in your favor.
Recovery and Results
PRP injection can cause mild pain, irritation, and uneven distribution at times. (1) It is important to follow all recovery instructions given to you by Dr. Rotemberg closely to ensure the full effects of the treatment can be achieved.
Both treatments are minimally painful and the downtime associated with them is incredibly short. Though the procedures might be quick and easy, they usually have to be repeated for up to 6 months in order to see the results you desire. Don’t become discouraged when you don’t see a significant difference after the first month. The body takes some time to produce collagen and grow new hair follicles.
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
Microneedling
A minimally invasive procedure, microneedling is performed to smooth the texture and tone of skin. The minuscule needles used stimulate the collagen and elastin in the skin to rejuvenate it. Dr. Rotemberg offers this procedure in conjunction with LaseMD, the same laser used for KeraLase.
Microneedling can be beneficial for those with acne scarring, large pores, wrinkling and fine lines, uneven skin tone, and even stretch marks. The needles penetrate the skin causing controlled injury, and then the skin works to repair it by producing collagen and elastin fibers that promote healing.
This treatment has very minimal downtime as well, so it is a great option for total skin rejuvenation without the long healing periods associated with other types of skin treatments.
During your consultation, you will have plenty of opportunities to ask Dr. Rotemberg about microneedling and any other procedures you may be interested in.

FAQ
Will my regrown hair look natural after hair replacement treatment?
Both treatments initiate natural hair growth, stimulating the hormones and proteins that already exist in the scalp. The hair follicles that grow back are your own, creating a very natural and organic effect. Dr. Rotemberg makes sure to follow your natural hairline to ensure your regrowth follows the way your hair already grows.
What happens if I stop using KeraFactor Serum or stop getting PRP treatment?
There is limited evidence on how long the regrowth continues after treatment, but it has been observed that results can last up to 18 months without any additional procedures. If you finish your treatment plan with KeraLase, you may need a recommended shampoo that will help maintain growth hormone levels between treatments.
