A breast augmentation procedure is a treatment that uses implants to improve the shape and size of the breasts, while a breast lift removes excess tissue to help lift the breasts to a higher position. About Breast Augmentations and Lifts

Breast augmentation and breast lifts are two of the most popular procedures in the country, ranking second and fourth, respectively. (1) In a breast augmentation with a lift, also known as an augmentation mastopexy, Dr. Rotemberg can increase the size of the breasts with implants while removing excess tissue to lift the breasts to a higher position.

In an augmentation mastopexy, Dr. Rotemberg can restore volume through the use of implants. These biocompatible implants are often measured in cubic centimeters (cc) and can be found in a variety of sizes. (2) Not only is there a range of sizes to choose from, but there are also different materials and textures. Breast implants can be either saline or silicone, both providing different advantages.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are composed of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution. However, saline implants tend to be more likely to cause visible rippling.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are composed of a silicone shell filled with silicone gel. The cohesive gel creates a softer and more natural feeling when placed in the breast tissue. This type of implant is often preferred by women with thinner skin, as they are less likely to result in visible rippling.

Whether you are looking for a dramatic enhancement or a subtle change, Dr. Rotemberg can help find the best type of implant for every patient.

Benefits of a Breast Augmentation and Lift

There are many benefits of receiving a breast augmentation and lift, both reconstructive and cosmetic. A breast augmentation can help restore the shape and volume of the breasts. For patients who have experienced trauma to the breasts or who have undergone a mastectomy, a breast augmentation can help restore a more natural appearance. Individuals experiencing ptosis, or the drooping and sagging of the breasts, will benefit from an enhanced appearance. (3) With a customized breast augmentation and lift at our office, Dr. Rotemberg can help you achieve your body goals.

Candidates

The ideal candidates for a combined breast augmentation and lift are those who are interested in restoring the volume and shape of the breast while also addressing issues such as sagging or drooping tissue. Individuals interested in restoring and restructuring the breasts after a mastectomy or injury may also benefit from a breast augmentation and lift, as well as those generally dissatisfied with the shape and volume of their breasts.

All candidates interested in this procedure should be in good overall health and free from any underlying conditions that may impair the healing process.

Preparation

Before each procedure, Dr. Rotemberg will prepare a list of preparation instructions for each patient at their personal consultation. This is to ensure each patient is not only properly informed before the start of their procedure but also to ensure the most optimal results and a quick recovery. Patients may be asked to temporarily refrain from the use of certain medications or supplements that have blood-thinning properties. If applicable, we require that patients stop smoking weeks before their procedure and continue to refrain from smoking until they are fully healed.

Breast Augmentation and Lift Procedure

Patients will receive anesthesia for a comfortable procedure. Dr. Rotemberg will perform the augmentation or implant placement before removing excess skin with a breast lift.

First, Dr. Rotemberg will make an incision to prepare a pocket for the implant. This pocket can either be made submuscularly (below the muscle) or subglandularly (above the muscle). (2) Then she will place the implants into the breasts.

To lift the breasts, Dr. Rotemberg will make an incision with one of the following three placements:

  • Circumareolar, or around the outside edge of the areola. This placement can also be referred to as the “donut” incision.
  • Circumvertical, around the outside edge of the areola with the addition of a vertical incision, also commonly referred to as the “lollipop” incision.
  • Anchor-shaped, this incision adds a horizontal incision along the breast crease to the circumvertical incision and is primarily reserved for more severe cases of ptosis that require more extensive correction.

Dr. Rotemberg will determine this incision placement at your consultation. After making an incision, Dr. Rotemberg will remove excess skin from around the breasts, repositioning them to sit higher on the chest, creating a more sculpted and youthful contour. If necessary, Dr. Rotemberg can reposition and reshape the nipples.

Recovery

Following the procedure, patients may experience discomfort in the treatment area due to swelling and bruising. Soreness and tightness may be managed through the use of pain medications. Patients may be asked to wear a compression garment throughout healing. This is to ensure that the new structure of the breasts is properly supported and to help minimize any excess swelling in the treatment area.

For the 1-2 weeks of recovery, patients should take time away from work and other commitments to rest. However, those with more physically strenuous jobs may need to wait until Dr. Rotemberg approves before returning to work. Patients should avoid strenuous physical activity and other intensive tasks during their recovery.

Results

Breast Augmentation and Lift Dr. Silvia Rotemberg Rotemberg Plastic Surgery

Patients will be able to enjoy their newly contoured breasts about 6-8 weeks after their procedure once the breast implants have settled into a more natural position. Once the final results are visible, patients can enjoy a more symmetrical and lifted bust, improved breast shape, and improved nipple placement. The results of breast augmentation and lift are long-lasting, restoring confidence to women regardless of their aesthetic background or goals. Patients who receive silicone implants will have to schedule breast imaging 3 years after their procedure, and then every 2 years after that. All patients who receive implants will have to get a replacement after 10-15 years, or sooner if necessary.
