Increasing the volume of your lips with lip fillers is an effective treatment for improving their natural shape for a fuller, plumper appearance. Have you noticed your lips losing volume and developing wrinkles as you age? Lips lose fat and shape naturally over time, leading to the development of fine, vertical lines.
At Rotemberg Plastic Surgery, we have helped thousands of patients achieve a natural look and improve signs of facial aging with fillers. Lip fillers are an effective treatment for transforming your face and balancing your proportions. Approximately 30% of cosmetic, nonsurgical procedures are dermal fillers (1), and specialists performed more than 1.4 million lip augmentation treatments in 2023 to help patients achieve their goals. (2) Dr. Silvia Rotemberg is a board-certified plastic surgeon with decades of experience helping patients improve their appearance.

About Lip Fillers
Lip fillers are a gel-like substance injected into your lips with a thin needle to add volume and improve the appearance of wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid fillers are formulated differently to meet your specific needs. Lip fillers are specifically designed to increase the volume of areas with delicate soft tissue, and they move with your natural facial expressions. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced in your body to keep your skin moisturized. When used for the lips, the minimally invasive fillers can keep them soft and give them a natural feeling without downtime. Dr. Rotemberg offers two types of hyaluronic-acid-based fillers that can reshape your lips: Juvéderm and Restylane.
Juvéderm
Juvéderm is designed to improve lip volume, correct asymmetry, and soften lip lines for a smoother appearance and plumper look. The hyaluronic-acid-based formula is designed with Vycross technology– cross-linked molecules that provide natural-looking results. With the flexible formula, we can increase the volume of your lips without affecting your facial expressions. The formula contains lidocaine for a comfortable treatment, and you can return to your daily routine immediately.
Restylane
Restylane Kysse is also a hyaluronic-acid-based formula designed to help you achieve fuller lips and reduce the appearance of lip lines. The treatment is formulated with XpresHAn TechnologyTM, which is cross-linked to provide the necessary support to correct volume loss when gravity pulls on your skin and collagen levels decline. We can reduce the depth of wrinkles and deep lines around your nose and mouth with the treatment. If you want to improve the appearance of your “cupid’s bow” or reduce “smoker’s lines,” this treatment can help you achieve effective results.
Lip Filler Benefits
Lip fillers are an excellent option for both men and women who want a smoother lip line and natural-looking volume. After receiving lip fillers, you can enjoy several benefits, including:
- Increased lip volume: You can enjoy fuller, plumper lips and more balanced facial contours.

- Increased self-confidence: Many patients feel better about their appearance, which can improve their confidence.
- A more youthful complexion: We can diminish the appearance of wrinkles for more alluring lips.
- Minimal downtime: You can immediately return to your daily routine with no recovery period.
- Fast, effective procedure: The quick procedure only takes approximately twenty minutes.
- Customizable treatment: We can help you achieve your desired lip shape and size with fillers specifically designed for soft tissue.
- Long-lasting results: If you take good care of your skin, you can achieve results that last up to a year.
Lip Filler Candidates
An ideal candidate for lip fillers would like to correct the appearance of thin lips, vertical lip wrinkles, or a combination of both. Suitable candidates are non-smokers with realistic expectations about what they can achieve with the treatment. Fillers are an excellent alternative to more invasive procedures and are ideal for the busy parent, an employee of a demanding job, or a patient who wants to achieve results with a minimally invasive approach. Lip fillers are available to adult men and women of all ages. Personal Consultation
Dr. Rotemberg wants to provide a safe, healthy experience for you. During your consultation, she will ask about your general health, past procedures, current medications, and allergies. You will also need to discuss your lifestyle. If you smoke or take supplements, she will need to know. She will walk you through the procedure, potential risks, how to prepare, and how to care for your lips to achieve long-lasting results. Dr. Rotemberg will examine your lips and take photos. She will also take measurements to determine the best areas to administer the filler. We encourage our patients to ask questions and voice their concerns. Dr. Rotemberg and her expert staff want patients to feel well-informed and confident in their upcoming procedures.
How to Prepare for Lip Fillers
With a minimally invasive lip filler procedure, you will not need to do much to prepare. The appointment is so quick that most patients schedule it during lunch breaks. To prepare for lip fillers, you will need to:
- Stop taking blood thinners
- Cease drinking alcohol for 24 hours before and after your treatment
- Take good care of your skin
- Avoid sun exposure that could lead to skin damage
- Delay tanning bed treatments or harsh chemical peels before your appointment.
You must take good care of your skin and use products for your skin type. We may delay your treatment if your skin becomes irritated before your appointment.
Lip Filler Procedure
When you arrive for your appointment, Dr. Rotemberg or a nurse will cleanse your skin and apply a topical anesthetic. You can request a local anesthetic as well. Dr. Rotemberg will precisely administer the fillers while maintaining your natural lip lines. She may massage your lips to distribute the formula and help it settle into your skin to ease wrinkles. Massaging your lips can help her strategically shape them with the filler for your desired look. (3) The treatment takes approximately 15-20 minutes, and you can return to your daily routine immediately afterward.
Recovery
Although the treatment does not require downtime and minimal recovery, your lips may be sensitive or slightly swollen for the first few days. You will need to take good care of your skin, and you can use ice packs to alleviate any temporary discomfort. For the best results, you will need to avoid alcohol and aspirin for the first week after your treatment.
Results
After your treatment, you can enjoy fuller, plumper lips and natural-looking results. Since the fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, your body will naturally absorb them over time. You can easily maintain your results with a touch-up appointment a few times a year whenever you notice a change in appearance.
Corresponding Procedures
If you need additional treatments to meet your aesthetic goals, we can combine lip fillers with other treatments to help you improve your appearance. Many patients combine lip fillers with Botox, microneedling, and platelet-rich plasma treatments to renew their skin and prevent signs of facial aging.
Botox
Botox can help you reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines for a smoother complexion. The neuromodulator temporarily relaxes your muscles and nerves, making the face more relaxed. Repetitive facial expressions can wear on your skin, resulting in wrinkles that affect your perceived age. With a simple injection, we can improve deep lines on the face that form around the mouth, nose, and eyebrows. If you want Botox during your lip filler treatment, Dr. Rotemberg can complete both in approximately half an hour. You can immediately enjoy an improved complexion and a more youthful, smooth appearance.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a non-surgical treatment that reduces the appearance of acne scars, blemishes, wrinkles, discoloration, and large pores. It stimulates collagen production with tiny needles that puncture the skin for a powerful glow. During the treatment, Dr. Rotemberg will apply a numbing cream to minimize discomfort and use a handheld SkinPen with medical-grade needles to renew your appearance. The procedure takes approximately thirty minutes to an hour. After the procedure, patients rarely experience discomfort, but you may experience some minor skin irritation. The treatment does not require downtime and can improve the quality of your skin as collagen transforms it to be more firm and soft.
PRP Application
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a serum containing growth factors naturally found in your blood. During the procedure, Dr. Rotemberg will take a sample of your blood, extract the plasma, and create a serum to apply to your skin. She will perform microneedling to help the serum penetrate your skin barrier. The microchannels created during the microneedling process will allow the PRP serum to reach deep into the dermis to stimulate collagen production and improve skin quality. The microneedling process alone can greatly improve the quality of your skin, but when paired with PRP, you can enhance its appearance more quickly. After the treatment, your skin may be slightly flushed for 24-48 hours, but you can immediately return to your normal routine. Dr. Rotemberg may prescribe a moisturizer to help keep your skin hydrated and healthy while it recovers. To learn about additional procedures for improving the appearance of your skin, see our blog.
