Are you tormented by a double chin?
Take comfort in knowing that you are not alone. According to a UCLA study, 80% of men and women are discouraged about excess chin fat. That’s because a double chin is difficult to eliminate through diet and exercise alone. This condition does much more damage than just making you look heavier, older and cosmetically unappealing. Having a double chin can actually prevent you from getting that job, promotion or romantic partner. Don’t blame yourself. There are many causes for a double chin that you can’t control such as aging and genetics. Besides, most of us naturally store extra fat inside this submental compartment beneath the jaw.
Dr. Silvia Rotemberg understands your frustration in not wanting to be held back by this condition. Dr. Silvia Rotemberg will discuss the latest innovations and long-established treatments in a collaborative atmosphere in which you are her partner. Your needs, desires and overall health are imperative in choosing the best treatment.
Dr. Silvia Rotemberg is here to help you in rejuvenating your life with a more youthful and slender appearance by addressing your needs thoroughly and compassionately.
Noninvasive
Until recently, the only alternative for chin fat removal has been to cut away the excess fat through a mini face/neck lift or vacuum it out with liposuction. This meant anesthesia, possible complications and longer recovery.
But now there is Kybella. It is the first-ever nonsurgical alternative to destroy targeted fat cells around the chin without causing harm to surrounding tissue with little to no down-time.
What is Kybella
Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment for adults with moderate to severe chin fat. First manufactured by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, the drug is recently purchased by Allergan (makers of the popular age-erasing injectable, Botox). However, Kybella was initially named ATX-101 by the Westlake Village, CA, company.
How Does Kybella Work
Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a “naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown of dietary fat,” according to Kythera.
The injected drug eliminates fat cells by destroying the cell membrane. The released fat is then absorbed and metabolized by your body. Because the fat cells are eradicated, the results are believed to be permanent.
At the very least, the results will last two years as evidenced by patient studies.
How Much is Needed
Depending on the severity of your condition, expect to receive up to 50 injections in a single sitting. A full course of treatments may extend up to six months with appointments one month apart until achieving the desired effect. However, you and the doctor will decide how many treatments are needed.
How Long Does It Take
Kybella is only intended for reduction of submental fat (triangle of neck below the chin) and can take up to six months to see the full result. However, it is possible to see a noticeable difference after only two treatments. Kybella is not indicated for loose skin, although, you may observe a 20% tightening of saggy skin beneath the chin during the visit.
Kybella Placement
As with any injectable treatment, to be effective and safe it is necessary to have the right amount of drug administered to the correct areas. But you can have complete confidence in Dr. Silvia Rotemberg’s expertise in identifying the precise region of subcutaneous fat to be extracted while protecting your important anatomy. First, she will mark the mandibular border (lower jaw) and 1.5 cm below that area as a non injection zone to protect the marginal mandibular nerve. Then the location of fat deposit is tagged with a transfer tattoo and dampened with water. Next, a grid of 1 cm evenly spaced marks will dot the injection area for proper dosage to the key region.
Options
Have you been contemplating alternatives for skin tightening? Here are a few:
Conventional Liposuction
During liposuction, cannulas (small, thin tubes) are placed through tiny incisions. The tubes are manually moved around beneath the skin to target identified fat deposits. It is still considered effective although it does not allow for maximum fat removal. This is because of a greater risk of contour deformity by too deeply probing with the suction tube.
Laser, Radio-Frequency and Ultrasound Liposuction
Nonsurgical liposuction use technology applied to skin contact without the use of injections or cuts. The results are subtle with less cost and healing time. Beware that these methods can potentially cause burns, scars and dermal adhesions from the intense heat of laser, radio-frequency, and ultrasound devices on the delicate chin and neck areas.
SAFELipo
A safer alternative in liposuction. Using a three-step treatment of fat separation, aspiration an equalization. It is a formula that combines the processes of liposuction, fat shifting and fat grafting without injuring the surrounding tissues. It provides for maximum fat extraction with minimum amount of side effects. The overall results have been firm, smooth skin.
Face/Neck Mini Lift
A facelift or neck lift will improve your condition in one surgery with results that last ten years or longer. However, a secondary procedure may be required depending upon your skin type and age. The risk of anesthesia and significant recovery time are other factors to consider.
Double Chin Removal
Another form of extensive surgery in which chin and neck fat, excess skin are removed. But there is also the added procedure of reconstruction if your chin is not prominent enough for the newly tightened skin. A chin implant will replace the fatty tissue that had before supported the skin. The implants are typically constructed with solid silicone or plastic silicone. The implants are in danger of rejection, infection or even moving out of position.
Benefits of Kybella
This minimally invasive procedure is quick. Because there is no surgery which carries further risk, no general anesthesia or recovery time is involved. Kybella is FDA-approved (safe for most people) and has few side effects with the treatment. You will see a noticeable difference after only a few visits. A more costly facelift will only tighten and pull skin around the fat. But Kybella actually melts away fat cells for longer-lasting and even permanent results.
You will enjoy a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance without the worry.
Can It Be Used for Other Parts of the Body
Currently, Kybella is only FDA-approved for the chin and neck areas.
Who is a Good Candidate for Kybella
Any skin type or ethnicity of a person over 18 years old who is dissatisfied with moderate to severe submental fatty tissue can benefit from Kybella. Keep in mind that you must be in general good health. Patients who are pregnant or have an active infection should postpone Kybella treatments.
